Some people might not know this but it is possible to survive a bombardment. It's mostly down to a great deal of luck and a little bit about how hard you are praying in your fox hole.

Especially if we're talking about cannonballs. They're just big pieces of lead or iron, and the bulk of their damage to people is not direct hits, but the concussion wave that occurs when that mass impacts with something solid and all that kinetic energy gets converted to a shock wave. This is "Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy" stuff, and it gets complicated. But basically the cannonball has a stored amount of potential energy based upon it's mass. Once that cannonball is fired from a cannon the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy which builds up a payload over distance, minus a modicum of energy lost to atmospheric friction; which conversion ends up being a multiplicative of distance traveled plus the work done by gravity attracting the mass toward the ground. Short story: it it actually hits you, you are one person dead. If it hits anything more or less solid, the shockwave can rupture ear drums and produce aneuryisms; implode internal organs; induce concussions, and any shrapnel that results from the impact won't be deadly, but won't make you feel very good.
